One of the most common statements that is heard equates property damage to the amount of damage a person will have physically (whiplash ). This argument for auto accident injury holds absolute no relevance in the real world and is utterly false. There exists no peer reviewed research paper expounding such an idea.
Another statement that is uttered in regards to the speed at which a collision occurs; high speed was not involved and therefore one couldn’t possibly be hurt. Again, high speed does not have to be involved in a car accident in order to cause injury. The peer reviewed paper by McConnell et. al. entitled “Analysis of Human Test Subject Kinematic Responses to Low Velocity Rear End Impacts”reveals the threshold for injury, specifically “whiplash injury” is 4-5 mph.
In article “Whiplash Injury Threshold: New Lower Speed Defined” by Arthur Croft, DC, MS, MPH, FACO, the Spine Research Institute of San Diego reported the threshold for a whiplash injury as being 2.5 mph.
As you can see from these articles, the speed and the change in sudden acceleration can be very low to cause injury. Below is a video on live subject testing, both in real-time and in slow motion speeds. The impacts are 4 and 6 mph and you can see that although there is no property damage, the occupant is accelerated and subsequent decelerated (as she puts her foot on the brake).
